Time to actually do something serious with that sci-fi panel texture I've been playing with. A long, long LONG time ago, I drew a design for a ship that took inspiration from some of the iconic ships of Star Wars. Namely the Millennium Falcon, Outrider, and KOTOR's Ebon Hawk. You know, the bulky, weirdly asymmetrical freighters. I sketched it on paper, then colored it in Flash (the vector drawing made it much easier to do line art, and I didn't have access to Illustrator at the time.)
A little while later, DeviantART had a contest to design a ship for EVE Online, so I made a model in Maya based on this design with some adjustments and changes. Never stood a chance of winning, but it was a fun project that I probably wouldn't have otherwise expanded on.
13 years later, my powers have greatly increased, and I thought I'd have another go at this design in Blender, making full use of a procedural texture I've been wanting to work out for a long time. In my "Sci-Fi City" post, I mentioned finding a great tutorial for sci-fi panels. It works great, but I was actually able to cut out several steps and make this much simpler version that retains more square shapes and gets less weirdly geometric. I actually used two copies of this texture setup. One with a larger scale, and one smaller. And I just brought in the greebles from the N-91 model I posted before to stick on and add some more detail.
